Taste of the Point: 2022 Round Up
Happy Holidays! For December we thought we would look back on some or our favorite places that we liked in 2022 just in case you missed them the first time around, so here they are, enjoy!
COFFEE DRINKS
Cortado
For the Cortado, we liked Bird Rock Coffee Roasters. As a reminder, a Cortado consists of espresso mixed with an equal amount of warm milk to reduce the acidity. At Bird Rock we thought the ingredients were top notch, and it had a nice aroma with a bold taste that wasn’t too overpowering.
Pumpkin Spiced Latte
For the best Pumpkin Spiced Latte we chose Better Buzz Coffee. We went though the drive through to get our drink and when we took the lid off the Pumpkin Spice Latte, the first thing we noticed was the foam had a dusting of pumpkin pie spice, which was a nice touch, and it was something we didn’t get anywhere else. With the first drink we experienced the combination of the pumpkin spice aroma mixed with the pumpkin flavor of the coffee, and it was excellent.
MIXED DRINKS
Margarita
For the best Margarita we like Miguel’s Mexican Cantina. We ordered the traditional Margarita and requested white Tequila to be used. The drink was mixed by hand, in front of us, with freshly squeezed lime – no pre-made mixes were used and that made all the difference. The Tequila didn’t overpower the drink and it had a nice lime flavor, which we feel is the test of a good Margarita.
Mai Tai
For Mai Tai’s we liked the Kona Kai Resort. The rum in the drink was a mixture of Bacardi, Captain Morgan, and Gosling, which is a Dark Rum. First sip was strong, since the dark rum was added to the top of the drink, but it was a nice touch. The drink had good rum flavor, with a hint of orange and lime on the back end and after one sip I wanted more.
RESTAURANTS
Supannee House of Thai
For Thai food you cannot top Supannee House of Thai in Point Loma. One of the nice things about this place is the owner, Supannee House, started her own home garden where she grows many of the fresh vegetables she uses in the restaurant every day. We tried two soups the Tom Yum Soup, a classic Thai hot and sour soup, and Tom Kah Soup, a traditional coconut milk soup and each was very tasty. We sampled the Massaman Beef, which is slowly braised in a curry sauce with potato, carrots and peanuts that was also very good
Sushi Lounge
For Sushi there is only one place that is our “go to” in Point Loma, the Sushi Lounge, which we have found to have excellent food at reasonable prices. We tried the Happy Wife and Ring of Fire specialty rolls, and it was a thumbs-up all around. The Happy Wife consisted of tempura sweet potato, spicy yellowtail, cucumber with salmon, albacore, avocado, fresh cilantro, thin jalapeño on top, and truffle “happy wife” sauce. The Ring of Fire contained Albacore, serrano chili, cucumber, spicy crab layered with yellowtail and avocado, topped with fried jalapeños, lemon wasabi aioli, garlic ponzu. All of it was delicious.
Ketch Grill and Taps
We found a good burger at Ketch Grill and Taps. Now you wouldn’t think that a seafood restaurant would serve up a good burger but they do. At Ketch Grill we had the unpretentious 10oz double cheeseburger with bacon and found it to be very satisfying. The bun was fresh and lightly grilled, the burger was very tasty and not greasy, and the toppings were fresh and not overdone.
DESERT
Portside Coffee and Gelato
We tried three different ice-cream shops in Point Loma – Portside Coffee and Gelato, Stella Jones Ice Cream and The Craft Creamery – and really liked them all. But Portside Coffee and Gelato was unique enough to take the top spot. Portside Coffee and Gelato, is tucked away next to Ketch and the only gelato ice cream in Point Loma. It had a wide selection of freshly made gelato flavors. We tried the Brigantine Mud Pie and Moose Tracks and they were both wonderful. One taste and I felt like I was in a Piazza in Roma! The mud pie was especially good with a nice coffee flavor. Make sure you take them to go and take a stroll down the marina, and experience everything that is beautiful about Point Loma.
So there you have it – our pics for 2022. Have a happy holiday and remember – it is what you eat that matters.
