Taste of the Point – Gelato and Ice Cream
This month our sweet tooth got the better of us and we decided to look at frozen treats, in particular gelato and ice cream. The ingredients are mostly the same for both – milk, cream, sugar and flavorings of some sort. But gelato uses more milk and less cream than ice-cream and usually doesn’t use egg yolks like most ice cream. So, to put it succinctly, gelato is more dense and intense while ice cream is more fluffy and creamy.
I tried three places in our search – Portside Coffee and Gelato, Stella Jones Ice Cream and The Craft Creamery, and the winner is … all three! They were different types of ice cream shops – each delicious and unique in their own way, please read on to find out why.
Portside Coffee and Gelato, tucked away next to Ketch and the only gelato ice cream in Point Loma, had a wide selection of freshly made gelato flavors. I tried the Brigantine Mud Pie and Moose Tracks and they were both wonderful. One taste and I felt like I was in a Piazza in Roma! The mud pie was especially good with a nice coffee flavor. Make sure you take them to go and take a stroll down the marina, and experience everything that is beautiful about Point Loma. Bellismo!
Next up was Stella Jones Hand Made Ice Cream off Voltaire. Nestled up next to Lucadia Pizza, it has a nice coffee section as part of the shop. With 12 flavors like Peanut Butter Pecan, Smores, and Strawberry Oat Crumble how can you go wrong? But check out their limited time seasonal flavors – Salted Maple Banana Pudding, Apple Butter Crumble, Dulce De Leche Almond Cookies, and Pumpkin Cranberry Cookies – all only available until January. I tried the Double Chocolate and Salted Maple Banana Pudding and they were out of this world, creamy and delicious and they definitely tasted home-made.
So after these two wonderful ice cream shops what else could there be? Well there was another I discovered called The Craft Creamery. Now what is unique about this place is they don’t make their own ice cream. What they do is search creameries in the United States for the best craft ice cream and bring it all together for you in one place. They boast 40 unique flavors that are constantly changing. You can even join there “Craft Creamery Collective” and attend member only tasing events and get other perks – taking your obsession with ice cream to a whole new level! Some of the creameries represented include Double Rainbow, Stella’s Ice Cream, Tillamook, Bluebird Ice Cream, and Moly Moon’s Homemade Ice Cream. And of course all your favorite flavors are represented plus Double Rainbow Creamery offers soy ice cream for all lactose intolerant ice cream lovers out there.
So there you have it, three great places to get gelato and ice-cream right here in Point Loma and it is all quality – so next time you would like to treat yourself check them out.
We will be taking next month off so we will see you in the New Year with more reviews you can use. And remember, it is what you eat that matters.
