Taste of the Point – March 2022
This month we were in the mood for Thai – and there is only one place to get the best Thai food in Point Loma, and that is Supannee House of Thai. They serve authentic Thai cuisine and have been in Point Loma for over 10 years.
And the name? Well, Supannee House is not only the name of the business but it’s the owner’s actual name. Supannee was born in Thailand and grew up on a small rice farm East of Bangkok. She wanted to bring her Thai culture and fresh food to San Diego, so she opened Supannee House of Thai in Point Loma. And to provide her customers with authentic Thai flavors, Supannee started her own home garden where she grows many of the fresh vegetables she uses in the restaurant every day.
To begin with, we thought a nice warm soup would take the chill off a cold day in Point Loma. So we tried two different soups – Tom Yum Soup, a classic Thai hot and sour soup, and Tom Kah Soup, a traditional coconut milk soup. Each soup is made your way, with Chicken, vegetables, or tofu so we had the chicken. The soups were spectacular, the Tom Yum was loaded with chicken and had a wonderful hot and sour flavor. The Tom Kah had a creamy coconut flavor with a hint of sourness that was very appealing.
Next was the main course. We sampled the Massaman Beef, which is slowly braised in a curry sauce with potato, carrots and peanuts. It came with rice and the portion was enough for two people to share. It had a light curry flavor and the meat was extremely tender and tasty. We also tried the Stir-fried Young Ginger which is a vegetable stir-fry. It had a nice, light ginger flavor which was not too overpowering, and the veggies were crisp and fresh.
They also have fresh seafood dishes. One that is a particular favorite of ours is the 3 Flavor Fish, which are crispy, golden fish fillets with mushrooms, onion, peppers, pineapple, and chilies sprinkled with kaffir lime leaves – absolutely spectacular.
So for authentic Thai food with farm-to-table freshness try Supannee House of Thai. Until next month always remember, it’s what you eat that matters!
