Taste of the Point – August 2022
This month we had a craving for sushi, so we explored one of the local favorite sushi lounges. But first, did you know that Sushi has been a part of the American dining scene since the early 1900’s, when the first reported sushi shop opened in Los Angeles in 1906? Now there are almost 4,000 sushi restaurants across the United States!
Now when we want sushi, and there is only one place that is our “go to” for sushi in Point Loma, the Sushi Lounge, which we have found to have excellent food at reasonable prices. The fish is fresh, and they have a nice selection of hand-made sushi rolls and other specialties.
So we dove right in, with our tasters trying the Happy Wife and Ring of Fire specialty rolls, and it was a thumbs-up all around. The Happy Wife consisted of tempura sweet potato, spicy yellowtail, cucumber with salmon, albacore, avocado, fresh cilantro, thin jalapeño on top, and truffle “happy wife” sauce. And the Ring of Fire, as the name suggests had a little more of a spicy kick to it. The Ring contained Albacore, serrano chili, cucumber, spicy crab layered with yellowtail and avocado, topped with fried jalapeños, lemon wasabi aioli, garlic ponzu.
Now if you are in a non-sushi mood, they also have Noodles and Bowls and the traditional Bento Boxes. So, we ordered the Teriyaki Chicken Bento Box, and what we received was incredible and enough for two people! There were generous portions of nicely seasoned teriyaki chicken and rice, a 4-piece California roll, 4-piece veggie tempura, house salad and miso soup. The tempura veggies were especially nice with a batter that was light and crispy.
If you brought the kids, they would probably like the Gyoza dumplings, miso soup, and California rolls, but they do have a special Kids Menu and of course each of their items come with fries.
And to take the edge off a hard day at work, you can head over to the Sushi Lounge between 4 and 6 to reward yourself with some great food at special happy hour prices.
So next time you are in the mood for sushi, give the Sushi Lounge a try. And remember, it is what you eat that matters. Bon Appetit!
